In its first two years, the Padres High School All-Star Baseball Game was one of the most anticipated events of the spring.
Then the coronavirus pandemic hit, wiping out last spring’s game.
But with restrictions going away and things returning to normal, the game is back on, scheduled for Thursday, June 24 at Petco Park.
The 6 p.m. game will be preceded by a Home Run Derby at 5:30, a quick six-player show of power.
“This game, and the home run derby, showcases some of the tremendous talent in the San Diego high school baseball community,” said Padres Chief Executive Officer Erik Greupner. “Whether it’s our display of local high school baseball and softball programs at the CIF San Diego Section wall at Petco Park, or providing the experience of a lifetime by playing in a major league ballpark, the Padres remain committed to supporting our local high school athletes.”
The interactive high school display is located on the main concourse on the third-base side and features every school in the county.
The game is scheduled for nine innings and is an East-West format with the 15 and 805 freeways the dividing line.
The first game in 2018 ended in a 7-7 tie with Joey Magrisi (Torrey Pines), Devin Padua (Madison), Jack Dolak (St. Augustine) and Michael Campagna (Francis Parker) the stars.
Spencer Jones (La Costa Canyon) won the Home Run Derby.
The West won 7-3 in 2019 with Zavien Watson (Cathedral Catholic), Kevin Sim (Torrey Pines), Billy Tellous (Steele Canyon) and Emilio Luna (Castle Park) the stars.
Miles Cook (Rancho Bernardo) won the Home Run Derby.
In 2018, 46 of the 48 players in the game were either drafted or are playing in college. The number was 45 of 48 in 2019.
Tickets to the Padres High School All-Star Game are available at Padres.com/hsallstars. They are being sold as a package that includes a ticket to a future home Padres game.
